I was invited to submit article on the benefits of adopting animals from shelters, sharing my experiences over the years with our furry-kids. You'll find that I've also shared several photos of some of the furry-kids that shared and brightened our home.

Please do feel free to leave a comment on the Dames of Dialogue blog or drop a line here to let me know what you thought of the article and to share your own thoughts, resources or experiences with other readers.

I received a press release about a fantastic program starting up by the Solid Waste Planning and Recycling Section @ the County of San Diego… Apparently up to 50% of the volume sent to their landfill is organic materials – a valuable resource that when used properly actually can, according to Michael Wonsidler,  “improve air and water quality, reduce soil erosion and revitalize agricultural and garden soils”. Organics are very heavy, and according to the press release, the businesses in that area are charged by the ton for their waste production. Because of this it really does make sense to participate in composting systems.

We’ve mentioned before that small businesses like coffee shops can offer their organics to customers and local residents for their gardens. Larger producing outlets might want to work with farmers who can use the waste to supplement their animal’s diets – such as juice producers who can send the pulp to pig farmers or chicken farmers in their area. Even better though is to use that valuable resource to produce a soil supplement – composted humus.

The County of San Diego is rising to the challenge by creating a new program to help large and small businesses responsibly manage their organic waste. This could be expanded to include any office with a staff lunchroom, to larger grocery outlets and food production sites, to landscaping companies, restaurants and hotels. An initiative that we’d love to see emulated across the planet.
