Appreciation & Making a Difference

-- Quote of the Day --

“(upon returning from Haiti) I was definitely more appreciative of everything that we have – even just basic things like water, you know I could go to any faucet in town and knew that I was going to be able to get some water out of it and know that it would be safe and clean. And even just having a safe place to sleep – after going down there and seeing millions of people literally sleeping on the streets, taking over parks and creating tent cities. …I will probably never have to be homeless and I am so lucky for that, and so grateful for that. …You realize that you are really very fortunate living in a country like this. You get the sense that we really are the top percent and have all these luxuries.”

~ Chris Rakunas

Today’s quote originates from the Conscious Discussions Talk Radio episode that aired back on Nov 4 '12… titled: Delivering Hope to Haiti

-- Brummet's In the Media --

I was invited to write an article for the My Green Jobs blog by Joe Symons on how businesses can create effective, efficient recycling programs. It doesn't matter how large or small your business is, whether there is one employee (you) or thousands - this article is meant to empower you by showing how valuable this one small action for the planet can be. Please do feel free to visit the link below, and if you like the article share with your social networking circles or leave a comment.

 -- Positive News --

Now here is something really interesting that all schools and universities or colleges, auditoriums, sport centers and community recreation centers can learn from...

Teijin Frontier Co – a leading manufacturer of polyester fibers – has partnered with municipal schools to recycle old gym and sport team uniforms. The clothes are ground up and the fibers are used as a resource to make new polyester materials. They hope to expand the program to include all the schools and universities and city sport teams across Japan.

One of our radio show guests also told the story of going to a water park and seeing a large amount of "found" items - mostly t-shirts and towels. He asked the management what happened to these items if no one claimed them and was told that they just threw them out. So he arranged to pick them up and donate them to various charities and thrift stores in town. (*There are usually several non-profit thrift stores that sell items to raise funds for different charitable events and causes and hospital equipment, etc). Inspired by this, he also approached the gym manager where he worked out daily and found they had similar items left around the gym or from people who had abandoned their lockers - and so he made arrangements with the manager to get those items back in the community rather than being sent to the landfill.

Are you involved with a school or group? Do you attend classes of any kind? Do you visit a gym or drop into the local community center? If you do - here is a great opportunity for you to make a difference in your community. By doing this one small thing you support charities, enrich the lives of the impoverished populations in your community, raise funds for worthy causes, and keep valuable resources from ending up in the landfill.
