Youth Programs, Clean-Up Projects

-- Quote of the Day --

"I open my eyes and again,
I wonder:
Will this day bring forth joy
Or blunder?
My mind fills itself without
Making a sound;
I make a decision before my feet
Hit the ground;
Today... I say...
Is Brilliant."

I just learned that it is Newspaper Carrier Day! I didn't know they had a day of their own. Well, it is true that newspapers are a vital communication medium for people to know what is happening in their area. Our local paper has a section in the front listing regular events that groups and organizations host, and this is very helpful for those looking for volunteer opportunities, meetings and networking opportunities.

The local newspaper played a role in helping us find owners to some items we happened upon... This summer we have been cleaning up a section of the Kettle River called the Oxbow by locals, where a wildlife sanctuary can be found as well. We found a wallet, empty except an ID card and we've been trying to locate the American owner... and a scuba diving mask and snorkel set, which we advertised in the free section of the newspaper's classified ads "Lost & Found".  Most of the other items that we collected were genuine garbage, but we also found about 50 beer cans - some are so old that the metal is disintegrating, car tires and hub caps, wires, old beach toys and pieces of furniture (i.e. the seat from a kitchen chair.  This project took us about one week in total, but we actually did one day here, and one day there... over the summer season.

Anyway, we did hear from one newspaper reader, her son had lost a mask and snorkel set - but not the one we found. Dave told her that if no one claims it in a week or two, he would call her and she can have the set we found. If she doesn't want it, we'll probably just add it to our ongoing box that we set aside for donations.

Kidsforsavingearth.org – an organization that was sparked by one young boy who wanted to create positive change so he got his friends and family involved and that sparked the class getting involved, and it grew from there. He died, sadly the next year from a tumor, but the organization grew and grew – today it sparks positive change from American youth across the continent.
