I read in a Japan For Sustainability Newsletter (japanfs.org) that the Nihon Kotsu Co. - one of the top taxi services in Tokyo, experimented with electric powered vehicles in their fleet this year, in cooperation with Better Place (betterplace.com). This project allowed drivers to replace the rechargable batteries in "about one minute", reducing wasted time (such as at gas stations). The trial project allowed the industry to test out the logistics of changing over to electric power and the financial impact of switching over the entire fleet.

This exciting test project may just influence the world's leading taxi services to switch over to electric powered vehicles in their fleet. Imagine the impact that this could have when just one large city (like Tokyo) hosts 50,000 taxi vehicles or more.
