The Benefits of Arts, and Biomass

-- Quote of the Day --

"…I was able to apply my back ground in music and theater as a therapy …to help people where they are shut down to find out how they want to open up and connect with the community. …There are so many benefit that music has to our entire being. …We are educated through logic and reason – the left brain is dominant and we marginalize the importance of the right side of the brain, which is the side of the brain recognizes patterns, metaphors, connections between things. …When we hear (or play) music our brain is responding with both sides of the brain. …It makes their memories sharper, math scores go up… music helps us deal with change, helps us learn faster… respond quickly with an agile mind that can grasp many things on multiple levels. …All the arts are beneficial in this way, but music has this unique feature …of lighting up the brain in many, many ways.

-- Biomass Treatment Facility News --

*Source: japanfs.org

A centralized biomass treatment facility (biogas plant and composting plant) was built at Shikaoi town in Hokkaido, northern Japan in September 2007. The facility collects and treats massive amounts of cattle manure from livestock farming (mainly dairy cow farming) which is a key industry in the area. This waste was formally becoming a major issue, not just due to growing population food demands, but also due to urban sprawl - bringing houses closer to farming regions.

Before this facility (and others like it) was in place, the traditional management of biomass had not been utilized as the valuable resource that it is. The benefits of seeing biomass as a valuable resource can greatly enhance the planet, but also the economy as well.

One example of this is an innovative, is a major Japanese office equipment supplier (Ricoh Co.) who launched a multifunctional digital monochrome copier that uses biomass-based toners back in November 2009. The company developed this unique toner from biomass-derived materials for use in their multifunctional copiers.
