CFL's (Compact Flourescent Lightbulbs) use 75% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and this means that you save $35 in electricity costs over the lifetime of the bulb (5-10 years). Because they have such a long life you will have fewer shopping trips and produce less packaging waste over the lifetime - and less labor in changing the bulbs - for the life of each CFL you purchase. *Please remember that they can (and should) be safely recycled along with other flourescent lighting. Simply keep the old and burned out CFL's in a box with other flourescent tube lighting and when you have filled that box, simply take it down to your closest recycling center or retailer in your area.

Inititially when CFL's were first released they were quite expensive, large and limited in variety. Today CFL's are quite economical, can often be found on sale and rebates from power companies and government greening programs are also available to help offset the initial investment.

The bulbs themselves are available in a variety of sizes, styles and shapes to suit most home and office lighting needs. In the last few years we have seen new designs come out for dimmers, three-way and chandelier variations.

Specially designed outdoor CFL's endure the extremes of winter and summer. Decorative colors are useful for outdoor and mood lighting, however becuase the yellow color is less likely to attract insects, yellow CFL's are particularly useful for shed, work bench, entrance, entertaining and barn areas.

Some CFL's are coiled while others are sheathed in a cover - the sheathed variety is useful for sockets with no covers, where cleaning the bulbs would be more of an issue. I was checking out a display at a big box retailer's lighting section and saw that there are several different types of lighting now available for homes from those that produce a warm yellow glow to those that produce a bright white light. We have decided to use the bright white ones for our office, kitchen and reading lamp areas. For all our other rooms, we have chosen to use the warm yellow variety for the calming, relaxing ambiance it produces.

LED bulb's (Light Emitting Diodes) are the latest, green technology and may be an option for you to consider. Because it is a new technology, however, the initial cost of investing in LED lighting is fairly high and may be hard to justify for your family or office budget. I am certain, however, that as time goes on the price of LED technology will come down. Take for example the Xmas light strings with LED technology for both indoor and outdoor use - these are a great investment and will save you more than 80% of the energy costs during the holiday season.
